FROM SCRATCHWOOD TO WYCHWOOD

A Man of Greatness

from Chipping Norton, back on to the rolling plateau of the Cotswolds. The landscape is again open and wide; an effect enhanced by the prairie-like fields of modern agriculture.

Again, the settlements lie just off our road, to East and West, nestling in obscurity, off the beaten track since before the track was beaten.

Occasionally, one great man would leave an indelible mark on history, and his biographers would trace back through the records, to discover that he emerged from just such an address.

An example of this is Churchill (the village, not the man) and Hastings (the man, not the seaside resort).

The man was Warren Hastings, the village is Churchill, just off to the West.
